Student Experience

Hanneke Luth

Hanneke completed EDLE in May 2010. Her Thesis on "Behavioural economics in consumer policy - The economic analysis of  standard terms in consumer contracts revisited" will be published in the new Series "European Studies on Law and Economics",  Intersentia, Brussels, in 2010.

After studying both Economics and Law, the EMLE (European Master in Law and Economics) seemed to be the finishing touch to my student career before going into business. How was I to know that EMLE brought out the researcher in me, interested in using the economic analyses of law to arrive at academically sound policy recommendations?

Just like the EMLE, the EDLE in its unique structure allows you to meet people from all over the world, who share a curiosity for global affairs, an outgoing nature and the disposition to take on new challenges. The research seminars are very interactive; the input of all researchers, including PhD candidates, is regarded highly relevant when discussing ongoing research of all scholars. You are not just a student anymore. Being part of the EDLE group enables you to discuss your research with likeminded people who can provide valuable comments to further your research. Your academic skills will be broadened not only in your own research topic, but in the entire field of Law and Economics. You will find yourself attending conferences and seminars all over Europe, or even further away. My research in Regulation of Consumer Protection has brought me not only to several academic conferences, seminars and workshops, but also to meetings at the European Commission. The EDLE framework allows you to set up initiatives beneficial to your research, whether you want to do empirical research, advance economic theory, or make policy recommendations.

For me, deciding to participate in the EDLE programme was one of the best decisions I ever made. Interesting research, teaching, and participating in all sorts of academic and policy related activities all over Europe has agreed with me better than I could have ever imagined beforehand. I fully recommend anyone with an interest in research and who is enthusiastic about law and economics to participate in the EDLE programme. The EDLE is full of opportunities; it is up to you to take full advantage.

Bashir Assi

As a graduate student from the European Master Program in Law and Economics- EMLE, looking for a post graduate program to continue my studies in the field of law and economics, I was fortunate to become part of the EDLE program. The combination between the multicultural environment with the multiple university experience makes this program a unique PhD experience. For those who are willing to ?sacrifice? some efforts for personal enrichment besides an extraordinary academic experience, the EDLE is one great choice.

Starting with the faculty of economics, at Bologna University, in the first academic year, where I had the possibility to attend various courses in law and economics themes, I was able to obtain the necessary and desired tools to pursue my research properly. Added to some mandatory courses and seminars, Bologna faculty provided me with the possibility to attend various courses from an extended list, according to my personal choice and needs. After spending most of the first academic year in this Medieval, students? city in the north of Italy, I was invited to attend the summer school at the Hamburg Institute of law and economics. During the summer school I attended four weeks of brain storming lectures, on various topics in L&E (competition law, international law, contract law etc.) by top scholars from U.S. and Europe. Not to mention that it was a great privilege to enjoy the sunny and lively summer days in this harbor city, in north Germany, with a wonderful group of international students.

Once done with the summer school in Hamburg, by the beginning of the second academic year of the EDLE program, I joined- together with my colleagues- the Rotterdam Institute for Law and Economics- RILE, at Erasmus University. With its most suitable atmosphere for delving in own research, the RILE staff had put utmost efforts to make our Rotterdam period as fruitful and enjoyable as possible. While being stimulated by the challenging environment - both through the weekly seminars and the close guidance by the RILE scholars- the RILE period was of a great value for putting forward my dissertation cornerstones, which constitute the basis for the complete study to be developed in the subsequent period of the EDLE program.
