The Internal Market and Harmonization of Private Law - An Economic Approach

 

Short bio

Miriam Buiten is a PhD researcher focusing on the economics of legal harmonization in Europe. She has a background in both economics and law. In her thesis she applies economics of federalism, trade models and game theory in order to study the optimal level of European harmonization in the fields of civil and procedural law. She compares the economic considerations for harmonization with the legal framework laid down in internal market law and European constitutional law. Her research interests also include enforcement of law, collective redress mechanisms, competition policy and intellectual property law.

Short bio

I am a PhD candidate in the European Doctorate in Law and Economics (EDLE). I did my undergraduate studies at the Erasmus University Rotterdam in Economics & Business. In addition to studying economics, I’ve taken numerous Law courses and spent a year abroad at the Warwick School of Law. I’ve obtained a joint master’s degree in Law and Economics (EMLE) from the universities of Hamburg, Bologna and Vienna in 2012. In my spare time I enjoy walking and visiting new places.

Short bio

Maximilian holds a Master’s degree in Economics and Finance from Pompeu Fabra University in Barcelona and a German Diplom in Computer Science from the Baden-Wuerttemberg Cooperative State University. He has previously worked as a data analyst for Commerzbank and as a technical consultant for Hewlett-Packard.

In his research Maximilian studied the governance of meta-organizations, such as joint ventures and business networks. His methodological focus was the application of microeconomic theory, statistical data analysis and experimental economics. In 2015 Maximilian was awarded the Heinz Sauermann young-researchers prize. Next to his research he was also involved in teaching, supervising Master’s theses, as well as drafting external expert reports.

In September 2016 Maximilian joined PwC as a consultant in the area of business analytics.

European Doctorate in Law and Economics. She is a member of the State Bar Association in China since 2011. Her Ph.D. dissertation is entitled “Law and Economics of Security Interests in Intellectual Property”.
